Old Flying Topspin Gasing 7lb Spinning Top Handmade Kelantan Malaysia Game Set
This fabulous top set game emerged from the estate of wealthy world travelers.
The traditional Malaysian Flying Gasing Game:
A team is made up of 2 people: 1 thrower & 1 catcher.
The thrower will throw the Gasing top towards a mound, and when the top is about to touch down, he will give the rope a tug, which makes the top change direction and start to fly back towards him.
This is the moment the catcher has been waiting for.  The second the rope is uncoiled from the head of the Gasing, the catcher will step in and will scoop the top out of mid-air. The whole process is incredibly fast and the catcher needs excellent hand-eye-coordination to get the top on top of the little wooden bat he is using to catch it.
To make this mid-air catch possible, there had to be changes in the design of the Gasing, which has a very small tip as compared to the old design and is also heavier, and because there are no energy losses through friction (no spinning on the floor) this Gasing-design will spin an average of 30 minutes longer (compared to a ‘classic’ Gasing, which spins first on the floor).
The making of this Gasing is the same as the older models, first the maker needs to select a fine piece of hardwood. In Kelantan and Terengganu, a few species are normally used. Even than, only the base and upper roots or the portion where a branch joins the trunk are acceptable.
The wood takes a few weeks to dry naturally. It is then shaped into a discus. For the metal top, the edge has to accurately grooved in order to have a good grip of the metal rim. A good top requires perfect symmetry which is an important attribute to longer spinning time.
From start to finish, a good giant metallic top will need four to six weeks to complete.
The Gasing top is made from a combination of local hardwood and tin,
and no power tool were used in the making of it.
The massive top measures 7 1/2″ X 2 7/8″ tall and weighs 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
The top can be made to spin for more then 2 hours & 30 minutes, in the hands of an experienced team!
What is very unique about this Gasing is the hammered (steel? – a magnet sticks to it) & brass piece on the very top of it, on which the wooden stabilizer disc is sitting:

I do, however, require that the item be returned in no more than 30 days following arrival and be returned in original condition.
